There are however, limitations and risks to using magnetic signs, as well as the important care and maintenance requirements.
Below are 6 steps to take care of and maintain your magnetic car signs
1. The surfaces between the magnet and the vehicle must be kept clean and dry
If any moisture builds up between the magnet and vehicle it can create a chemical reaction over time and when this occurs, it will be almost impossible to remove the magnet in one piece. The paint on the car can then also be scratched very easily.
2. The magnet must be perfectly flat on the vehicle.
Contours and trimming can prevent a magnet from lying perfect flat against the surface of the vehicle. If the magnets are not flat, wind can catch under the magnet and rip it off the vehicle.
3. Use care when removing magnets from vehicle.
Lift a corner and peel magnet carefully from the vehicle surface. Extreme temperature can change the qualities of the magnet making it either brittle or highly pliable. Use care as these conditions make it easy to tear or break the magnet. Sliding or repositioning the magnet on an unclean surface may cause scratches or abrasion if there is dirt or particulates under the magnet.
4. Store unused magnets flat and avoid extreme temperatures.
If magnets need to be rolled for storage, roll them around a cardboard tube. Before use, unroll and store flat at room temperature until magnets return to a flat shape.
5. Remove magnets before driving at a high speed.
Vehicle Magnets can fly off vehicles traveling at high speeds. If the magnet is not securely attached to the vehicle at all edges, wind can catch under the magnet and rip it off the vehicle. This can create a hazard on the road.
6. Remove the magnets before using an automatic car wash
Car wash brushes can damage the magnet or slide it against the vehicle surface causing abrasion or scratching of paint.
Car magnets help spread the word about you anywhere you drive or park, and we can provide you with incredible looking magnets that fit most vehicles with ease.
Magnetic Signs not only help you advertise but they are also great identity builders for your brand. They give your company a professional image every time one of your representatives pulls into a client's location as you proudly display your message, logo and contact information.
Preparing the surface for the magnet.
Before affixing your magnet to a metal surface, make sure all surfaces paints, clear coats and waxes are dry.
Magnetic signs will not work on
- vehicles with non‐magnetic body panels (such as fiberglass)
- non ferrous metals like aluminum
- vehicles that have been repaired with thick body putty
- simulated wood‐grain sides
- vehicles that have been painted numerous times
Applying the magnet to the Vehicle
Attach your magnet to a smooth metal surface that is flat as possible. The surface should be free of trim, moldings, indentations, dents, ridges, or rust spots.
Do not apply a magnet that has been stored rolled with the magnetic surface facing out. The magnet may not attach properly to the metallic surface, resulting in lifted corners or air gaps which will weaken its hold on the metal surface.
Follow the instructions given below.
Start with one corner of the sign first, and then allow the magnet to pull against vehicle’s surface. If you place the magnet in the wrong position, completely remove the magnet from the surface and reaffix.
When removing the magnet, lift it at the sides and not at the corners. Do not pull the magnetic sign across the surface, as that may scratch the vehicles paint.
Avoid using magnets on horizontal metal surfaces exposed to direct sunlight or very high temperatures.
Please note that long‐term use on surfaces frequently exposed to sunlight (such as vehicles) can result in uneven fading of the surface as the area covered by the magnet is shielded from the sun and ultraviolet rays in particular.
Make sure that your magnets are firmly affixed to the vehicle before driving.
Removing and cleaning the magnets
When removing the magnets, be careful not to bend or crease the corners. Lift at the sides and not at the corners.
Remove your car magnets periodically to help ensure that they may still be securely fastened to the vehicle, and to perform and necessary cleaning. The surface of your custom magnet may be cleaned with a mild soap and water solution.
To help prevent the accumulation of moisture and dirt between the magnet and the metal surface, remove the magnet at regular intervals.
Clean both the magnet and metal surface with mild detergent (like the soap and water solution mentioned above); wipe with a soft cloth or allow both to air‐dry.
Daily cleaning is recommended with magnets mounted on vehicles - new vehicles in particular - to help protect their clear coat, base coat and/or vinyl surfaces.
Weekly removal and cleaning of the vehicle and magnets helps avoid magnetic polarization of the vehicle’s surface area under the magnet.
It is recommended that magnets be removed, inspected, and cleaned after any rain they are exposed to.
Make sure to completely dry your magnet and the vehicle surface after cleaning.
Keep your magnets in a clean, dry place when not in use. Store your magnets by stacking them on a flat surface. Do not stack magnets with the magnetic sides touching each other. Do not store heavy objects on top of or against your magnets.
NEVER fold a magnet.
The back and sides of a filing cabinet can be used as a way to store magnets, as can the front and sides of a refrigerator.
Proper use and care of magnets will help extend the life of your magnet and help to protect the metallic surface to which it is applied.
